Manitowoc has launched the ECS control and monitoring platform for Potain tower cranes in emerging markets. It will be fitted as standard on next-generation Potain tower cranes built in China and India.

The first crane model to use ECS is due later this year. The platform is designed to support crane operation, monitoring, maintenance and fault diagnosis through a cab-based human-machine interface and CAN bus electrical architecture.

Potain ECS will be installed on tower cranes manufactured in Zhangjiagang and Pune. According to Manitowoc, it reduces wiring complexity, speeds up crane installation, and makes maintenance and troubleshooting easier.

At the centre of the system is a 13.3-inch touchscreen in the crane cab with a 1920 x 1080 resolution. Operators can use it to access eight display screens covering crane data, operating preferences, zoning functions, display settings and other system information.

Both operators and technicians can manage the system through the same interface. The display shows operational information including wind speed, working radius, load weight and slewing angle.

Wiring change

Behind the interface, ECS uses Controller Area Network, or CAN, bus architecture. The design replaces dozens of wires normally used to connect motors, sensors and switches with a two-wire layout.

Manitowoc said this makes the system lighter and easier to install, while also making faults simpler to identify. Through the CAN wiring, the central controller links to slewing, hoisting, luffing and trolleying controls, as well as load sensors and limiters or encoders.

Data logging is another part of the platform. Manitowoc said it records historical information for fleet management and service work.

The system also includes maintenance-assistance features that flag operational issues and suggest steps to address them. Additional control modes are available for technicians and fleet administrators, giving them access to more functions than standard operator settings.

Operator settings

For crane operators, ECS includes adjustable driving-control settings. These allow movement and speed to be increased or reduced depending on the task, with faster settings for repetitive duty-cycle work and slower settings for more precise positioning.

Manitowoc said the platform has been designed so additional functions can be added over time. It described the system as scalable, allowing later changes without redesigning the whole control structure.

The launch reflects a focus on markets where demand for tower cranes is tied to construction, energy and infrastructure work. Potain, one of Manitowoc's crane brands, has a long presence in tower cranes sold across a range of international markets.

Leong Kwong-Joon, Regional Product Manager for Tower Cranes in Asia at Manitowoc, described the system as a step forward for users in those regions. "The Potain ECS represents a significant advance in the operation, management, and maintenance of tower cranes for emerging markets. There's greater control for the operator, faster troubleshooting for the technician, and better data for the owner. As construction, energy, and infrastructure projects advance across emerging markets, Potain is bringing new technology to drive greater efficiency on tomorrow's jobsites," said Kwong-Joon.
